Week 1

At Week 1, the four pups were still little round unseeing balls sleeping and cuddling up with one another and with their Mama. Some photos of Poe nursing and cuddling with her babies from within her underground den.

Meet the Parents

Introductions to Jasper's parents are definitely in order!

Mama Poe's Den

Mama Poe had created a den she felt would be a safe and nurturing environment to welcome her new babies into the world. Mama Poe had channeled her inner gopher and dug deep into the side yard a space that only she could access and protect from one spot. Mama Poe was amazing.

The Birth of Jasper

The time stamp of the text message we received from my sister stated that it was approximately 3 am on Saturday, April 4th, 2009. Poe just had her puppies. In her self-made gopher-like hole.

Poe's belly had been increasing in size the previous couple of weeks and growing puppies seemed to be the likely cause. The culprit was probably not Lucky, the mechanic's impressive-looking German Shepherd, as we learned that he was quite fearful of dear sweet Poe. We eyed Boxer, her fellow (and slightly dorky) German Shepherd companion.  Papa Boxer it was.
